When considering to move to an unfamiliar city, cost of living is a crucial deciding factor. However, finding all of the necesary information can be very confusing and time consuming.
To create a web solution that brings together all of the information that contributes to cost of living such as rent, food and transportation in a way that is user friendly and visually appealing.
Some of the top sites that are used to compare cost of living in different cities have a lot of valuable information but they are often text heavy, plain and visually outdated.
Tech savvy individuals looking to move to a city that they aren’t familiar with. 21-30 years old is the age when people are moving the most before they are settled with a family and a job they plan on staying at for more than a few years.
I wanted to focus on the pages the users see when they first visit the site. The user chooses the cities and continues to get general data comparisons between their two cities.
I did some research and thought a lot about different ways of representing the data to ultimately figure out what would be the easiest for the viewer to consume.
Mood Board: Subdued and Relaxed
This direction provides a peaceful sense for the user. It uses white for a base with cool colors and pops of brightness for accent colors. These colors will draw the attention of the user to important bits of information.
Final Comps: Landing Page
This is the initial page the user sees when getting to the site. It's important because they will learn exactly what the site is about.
Final Comps: Select Cities
On this page, the map initially populates with the most popular cities to live in. At a quick glance the user gets an idea of how expensive a city is based on the color coded categories and different styles of the circles.
Final Comps: Overview of Comparison
The goal of this page is for the user to get an overview of the information in the four categories. The data is easy to consume and is color coded in the same style as the previous page. The graphs are interactive which would most likely lead to an increase in interest and length of time spent on the site.
This is the interaction design for the user flow. Special attention is paid to how important information populates on the map and graphs for the comparison to bring the users attention to desired areas of the page.
